Why, only last week, Premier Steve Bracks was proclaiming, bird killing machines are the wave of the future. N.S.W. is already enduring short-run ( as in the time it takes to build a new electickity generating plant) shortages. Not lucky Victoria.

VICTORIA’S largest electricity retailer Origin Energy today announced plans for a $1- billion gas-fired power station near Warrnambool in western Victoria.

Origin Energy’s Victorian director Tony Wood said planning for the 1000 megawatt station near Mortlake would take two years and, if approved, construction would take another two years.
The plant would be supplied with recently discovered gas from the Otway Basin off Victoria’s south-west coast via an underground pipeline 78km long.

The state’s Environment Minister and acting Premier John Thwaites welcomed the announcement and said the new plant would boost the state’s power generating capacity by 12 per cent.

Mr Thwaites said gas-fired generators produced cleaner energy with 70 per cent less greenhouse gasses than the brown coal station’s in Victoria’s south-east.

If approved, the power station would create 300 jobs when construction began in 2006 and 30 permanent jobs when it begins generating electricity by 2008.

Now, if `alternative energy’ was viable, entrepeneurs would be out there churning out without being kept to the pillowed head by taxpayers by the coercive force of govt. So, Bracks is still intent on sacking good old taxpayer no entrepeneur will even poke with a 600 foot pole but, just in ase, is rejoices like children around a Christmas tree a company is about to sink capital into an anthropogenic power station, a $1b type station.
