PRESCHOOL children have been abused, abandoned and hurt in childcare centres in Victoria.

A Herald Sun investigation has found at least 43 children — including some as young as 18 months — have roamed free from centres in the past three years.
The Bracks Government has fought the Herald Sun for more than a year to keep this information secret.
A department source said DHS was prosecuting fewer centres and letting them off with cautions because of fears adverse publicity would put further strain on the childcare system.

“Parents have a hard time getting child care,” the source said. “There’s a problem with demand and DHS doesn’t want to see existing centres go under because of the publicity.”
