Mr. Gerard Jackson, amusingly, posted Monday morning on why it is a vulgarism:

To adhere to the idea that our export industries ?are being held back by bottlenecks?? and ?capacity constraints?? is to completely fail to comprehend what is happening to the economy. It?s not hard, however, to determine the source of the Treasurer?s error.

Recently Glen Stevens, Ian MacFarlane?s deputy at the Reserve Bank of Australia, warned that the economy was approaching capacity constraints and so growth would slow as output failed to keep up with demand, meaning monetary expansion.

This is truly bad stuff. Unfortunately this is the kind of advice that Costello is getting from the Treasury, his pals in the private sector and the media. And he?s buying it.

Bottlenecks are not a problem but a symptom of a capital structure that has been discoordinated by a very loose monetary policy. Costello?s advisors treat capital as homogenous and money as neutral, except with respect to the general price level.

Unfortunately primitive views on capital and money are heavily entrenched among the economic commentariat.

This monetary expansion discoordinates the production structure by generating overinvestment in the capital goods industries relative to the consumer goods industries

Because investment expenditure is being undertaken where there are insufficient complementary factors of production, particularly of a specific or part-specific nature, to either finish the project or provide the necessary circulating capital a bottleneck emerges. (I think I must still stress at this point that this is a theory of relative overinvestment and not general overinvestment).

Because production takes place in stages each firm that expands production does so on the assumption that the complementary factors at the higher and lower stages will be available. But because monetary expansion has distorted the pattern of production by sending out false price signals this is no longer the case.

What this means that there will be insufficient complementary factors to finish the firm?s project unless those factors can be bid away from other firms, which will only creates shortages elsewhere, i.e., bottlenecks. Before this situation fully develops I would expect producer prices to have already started an upward trend.

So how does the Reserve stand with respect to its monetary policy? From January 1996 to September this year currency grew by 72.7 per cent, bank deposits by 108.3 per cent and M1 by 100.3 per cent. The word for this is criminal.
Yet Henry Thornton, another economic commentator felt free to call the bank?s summary an ?excellent economic survey??, thereby demonstrating how far our economic commentariat has yet to travel.

I had, mea culpae, omitted to observe, well, that is precisely what fiat money and the exercise of govt. police state power to assert fiat money and the RBA’s exercise by delegation of coercion to forge money and manipulate rates to do so, amount to, the corruption and debasement of markets. It is worse than a simple money laundering of proceeds a criminal has stolen during a hold-up,ashing the forged rubbish through financial firms to producers and consumers.

With President Bush, Congress and Senate continuing to increase govt. consumption and taxation, Greenspan has been working hard throughout his time at the Fed to prop that fraudulent money by keeping the forger’s mint, the Central Bank, working over-time. It applies just as well to Australia and the RBA, to the former head of the RBA and his successor, indeed it is a disgrace Ian McFarlaine was given a gong for what is nothing less than a major criminal operation. Of course, the success of fiat money, and thus also central control over interest rates, rests entirely on govt. coercion. If hard money bankers were free to set up business, it is a good bet, many, from businesses to mums and dads would get out of fiat money. Inflation, forging money, is a tax, the govt. swipes your property without having to declare an official tax, and, financiers who are given the issue of the forged money, take a cut, , and for all else, prices are corrupted, leads to recessions, and the govt. and the financiers swipe your property. In the ancient world, from the Middle east to Rome, Kings and Emporers inflated by debasing coinage in gold and silver, by the trick of having coin minted out of metals of low price and a low quantity of silver or gold, if any at all of the latter. Funny that, they were the first to make the same claims for `increasing money supply’ as Keynesians do.

In his annual report, Greenspan, blames the expectations of Americans for any economic problems that can arise during the year ahead. And, as usual, like a good oracle, spoke in generalities and made contradictory and circular statements to dissmeble the appearance he is not a fraud and not engaged in crime, and not party to the recession which will come during the next 12 to 24 months.

Here is a link to a library’s worth of items put out by von Mises Institute documenting the many shocking criomes Greenspan has committed. Appallingly, many still believe he is an oracle, even a God in Boots. Thus the frauds at the RBA.

It might be noted, while nominally the RBA is set up as an agent independent of the Govt., that is not true. The function of the RBA, among others,`price stability’, that in itself should serve as an alert the operations of the RBA amount to nothing less than large scale fraud. In reality, it serves only Govt., and its consumption, to the losses of all else who are forced to use Govt. isssued fiat money. Hardly independent at all, to the contrary, it is mere instrument to all consuming fat god govt.

Isn?t it shameful enough for Alan Greenspan that his recklessly expansionary monetary policy to keep financial markets afloat has, by pushing interest rates to historically low levels, inexorably led to the much lamented over-indebtedness in the economy? Now the long suffering American taxpayer, saver-investor, and homeowner must endure his hectoring (?Fed Chief Questions Loan Choices,? Feb. 24) for taking advantage of the situation to lock in Fed-suppressed mortgage rates against the increasingly likely prospect that they will rise in the future. In the interest rate environment Mr. Greenspan himself has created, the only sensible strategy for homeowners is to let banks and other mortgage holders, such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, bear the considerable financial risk of rising rates. The ?very serious? risks these behemoths pose to financial markets that Mr. Greenspan warns against (?Mortgage Giants Pose High Risk, Greenspan Warns,? Feb. 25) is in no small part a result of his own loose monetary policy. While Congress is taking his advice to reign in Fannie and Freddie, it should bridle the Fed as well.

Greenspan: The Mind of God, or Merely Omniscient?

The issue is whether there is any economic rationality in the way that a central banker sets interest rates at a particular level. Mainstream economic doctrine holds that central bankers are necessary in order to prevent the economy from lapsing into recession or overheating into inflation. Can a central banker also save the economy from a stock market bubble? Greenspan is certainly right to ask how he should identify when a bubble is present.

Greenspan?s supporters attributed a god-like omniscience to the Messiah of Monetary Policy. But surprisingly, his detractors don?t question the need for a central banker to possess the mind of God, as some of the imagery used in the debate will show.

Maestro Greenspan is depicted as a talented central economic planner, one who can conceptualize the output of the economy, then coordinate the activities of millions of economic actors to keep the economy functioning at peak levels. In his role as a coach, he can ?talk the economy up?? and ?talk the economy down?? as needed. The Maestro must determine the correct rates of interest, the optimal quantity of money. He must fight inflation and keep the economy out of a recession, and be on guard for asset price bubbles.

Greenspan, as the Master Surgeon of the Economy, must use his diagnostic skills to identify inflation, deflation, or asset price bubbles before the economy suffers a terminal illness. He must then burst them with such skill that they pop harmlessly before they damage the economy. In the same manner that a surgeon must balance the risk of the further spread of disease should he not operate, Greenspan must delicately balance the social costs of an unskillfully burst bubble against those of an increased risk of an unnecessary recession should he raise interest rates too quickly.

The problem with the metaphors discussed above is that they wrongly conceptualize the problem Greenspan faces. The job description that Greenspan’s critics have blasted him for failing to perform is impossible.

For a central planner to arrive at the correct price would require him to have the ability to foresee the outcome of a market process involving millions of individual actors. Without the ability to see into the future, there is no way for the central planner to substitute his own judgment for the results produced by the market. The recent demise of the Soviet planned economy has since converted many skeptics to the truth of Mises’s argument

Ultimately, consumption is limited by production, and economic growth is limited by available savings. If entrepreneurs borrow more to invest in production processes without increasing savings, interest rates will naturally rise until it is no longer profitable for business investors to increase their borrowing. There is no need for a controlled price, nor is there any way for the price controller to arrive at the natural balance between loaning and borrowing that would occur by activity of savers and borrowers in credit markets.[14]

“Monetary policy” must be seen for what it is: a destructive form of central planning that distorts resource allocation and makes it more difficult for individuals to plan. The demise of Al.com is entirely just.
