Has reminded one of a survey reported on am radio today. For the benefit of overseas readers, as with so many other things, broadcasting is regulated by the Federal Govt., in other words, the govt. has buggered the market and granted monopoly to the two govt. broadcasters, SBS and ABC, and the three commercial t.v. networks, in return for the heist of `licence fees’, closed shop for `actors equity’ and sundry other mendicants.Which is why, t.v. is boring as watching snails race the three mile stakes at Flemington - the patch of grass they trot out the Melbourne Cup punters for aday of heavy gambling the pennies.

The Keating ALP Govt. decided to go a step further, declaring analogue transmission is to be shut down in 2006, all broadcasting will be digital. [Actually, this plays havoc with radio and regular comms too]. The Coalition Govt., rather than withdrawing the interfering hand, added, what a fine policy. I’m not sure why. They, for example, expect all and sundry to stump over the hard earned for a digital t.v. or a box converter. What a ripping success it is too, with only 15 % silly enough to go out and waste money on a brand new, expensive digitial thingo.

Further, guaranteeing many will not buy is, it utrns out digital is plagued by peculiar problems like, poor reception then, there is simply no picture at all. For broadcasters, next to the technicla headaches, the costs of braodcasting using digital transmission are a multile of those of analogue.

The commercials are staring handsome losses in the face as 2006 approaches. Good old socialism, punishing one day, ruinous absolutely the next. Well, that’ll teach the protectionist commercials to snuggle up to pollies. Ha, there’s an amusing implication, the AFL trying to extract rather more than the stations value broadcasting rights to AFL, they’ll be worth bugger all next year, rather like the cricket really.

Needless to say, the survey has brought out the dingbats, who are suggesting dah govt. subsidise the commercials to get digital t.v. into housleholds, if not direct subsidisation of idiot boxes outright.[ Oz is going to the socialisto dogs.]

It’s a good bet, FCO’s of the Commercials are drenched in pools of sweat as the fear factor sets in as in, they can see the advertsing revenues go down the gurgler. The downside is, Fat Aunty Bolshevik Collective won’t follow them down the gurglar, being kept on the back of good old taxpayer, and no doubt, even the Coalition Govt. will throw more at the bastards, and Slobadan Broadcasting Spastic Castroisto Corporation too, to squander on digital.
