The Extremely Sceptical Sceptic
I have, for many years now, prided myself on my unfailing rejection of the Green view of the various issues confronting the day to day lives of this great blue lump of rock. I have consistently been found to be on the happy side of angels in all cases, where I have taken a diametrically opposed viewpoint to whatever the latest idiot environmentalist has sprouted, regardless of what the issue is or my, frankly, limited research on the subject.
There is no doubt that the weather is getting warmer, but really, as my system has proven itself on so so many occasions, I am loathe to reject it straight out of hand.
I have seen the various doomsday prophets and profits come along. I have rejected every one of them because I knew that they were wrong by tradition and inclination, but then there is that old saying about even broken clocks being right twice a day.
I guess I am starting to be sceptical about my scepticism. I am by no means becoming a converted believer in the cult of Anthropomorphic Global Warming. I personally find the whole concept perverse and frankly pathetic. The general or garden-variety Global warming exponent has a fairly limited grasp on the concept of personal hygeine, let alone weather patterns, but despite that, I am desparately trying to keep an open mind.
I see something like this and I start to wonder. Am I right or am I wrong?
Feel free to castigate me from any position you like, but I think I have a way to either disprove of reinforce my innate scepticism.
Today is Tuesday 2nd Oct 2007. I want you to tell me what the weather in Brisbane is going to be on this date next year. Or even next month, in six months time, nine months time. Whatever you like. As a control, also tell me what the weather will be like in Fairbanks, Alaska.
I will check the weather bureau on the day nominated and see how close you were.
Use your global warming models, your insider trading information, your statistical training or even you dicky left knee to give me a guide and let me know how it was decided.
If you can show that your models are correct at such short range predictions, it will be more convincing to this sceptical sceptic. But if you can’t even tell me what the weather is going to be in one year, why should I listen to you about what it is going to be like in 50 or 100 years?
